Why do you write out the names of certain keys but not others?

There are two reasons that we write out the names of certain keys. The first is that there are a number of keystrokes that, when displayed on screen, are very small, such as an apostrophe. The other reason is that some symbols look very similar and we don't want there to be any confusion: the apostrophe and the grave accent are good examples of this.
